Pindus Trail > May, June, July / Activity Program – Volunteering
Time flows—honest, fair, revealing. As you stand on the rock and gaze into the future with a burning desire, a spiritual journey of patience and perseverance begins. It is not accompanied by fear; mountains do not fear—they only grieve the distance we have from our roots: we step on them yet drift away, we speak yet forget, we remain indifferent… Another winter has passed; it was a restless one.
This year, the field team’s activities were limited compared to previous years. Weather conditions and limited available resources required patience and organization at a level not visible, yet effective for the continuation of this effort. For several months now, we have been working quietly, monitoring developments on construction fronts related to the trails, while also dedicating significant energy to the struggle for the environment, which is under violent pressure.
The Pindus Trail route is extensive, and progress toward achieving proper accessibility and marking standards is advancing methodically, driven by a team that supports the mission with minimal yet valuable donations relative to the vast scale of the project. To clarify, the team is not salaried but manages to secure essential resources such as fuel, supplies, marking materials, independent cartographic data, and everything necessary for the Trail to move forward and be maintained. The Pindus Trail is not funded directly by public funds, as the social impact it aims to create lies outside the established system.
Following a steady path toward accepting donations and further training members, last year (2025) we were encouraged to seek support from the Points Of Support https://www.bodossaki.gr/en/our-partnerships/other-foundations/points-support-small-grants-big-ideas/ initiative, co-funded by 10 organizations, each representing a different sector.
This collaboration focuses on the protection of forest and other terrestrial ecosystems and began with free training for some members, along with the provision of resources to prepare the remaining materials needed to complete daily crossing section No. 6 along the axis. This section connects Athanasios Diakos with the Vardousia refuges and Artotina, covering a distance of 18 km.
At the same time, the insurance company Nakinsurance https://www.nakinsurance.gr/en/ which supports volunteering and environmental initiatives, offered to help by adopting a daily section of the route to ensure its completion and annual maintenance. This was also section No. 6 along the axis—the Mornos Valley trail—connecting Giona with Vardousia, passing through the villages of Sykia, Kato Mousounitsa, and Athanasios Diakos, with a total length of 12 km.
These two new partnerships of symbolic investment value, along with the steady annual financial support of the Fougaro Art Center https://fougaro.gr/en will enable the development of the Pindus Trail this year in the mountains of Roumeli. The goal is the final delivery of five daily sections (from Amfissa to Artotina) with solid accessibility and marking standards, allowing hikers to travel safely and connect with the nature, history, and culture of the region.
At the same time, they will support volunteer participation on the scheduled dates listed in the poster, serving the multidimensional mission of Terra Pindus to highlight and preserve the mountain range’s trails.
For participation requests, more information will be announced soon. Regular volunteers are informed that participation procedures remain the same: you call, and we provide location coordinates and an action plan. The same applies to those joining for the first time.
To participate, leave your message (dates – location) and contact phone number on the trail’s page https://web.facebook.com/PindusTrail/?locale=el_GR
We thank everyone who helps move this initiative forward and hope that through our generation, additional measures will emerge for the management of both the trails and the natural environment.
